Idolized.

Everyone has their 15 minutes of fame. I think it's safe to say this extends to cities as well. The Kansas City area is finally getting their moments of glory. David Cook has made it to the final two for American Idol. Next Wednesday is the finale and my lucky dad "has" to go. He writes for the Star and has been covering Idol from the beginning. For some reason, he'd rather not go to the event that is bound to be full of excitement and will be worth all of the hours he has "had to sit through all the sucky performances". I offered to take his place, and he not so politely declined my offer. So, be sure to see if KC will become more famous when Cook wins Idol.

David Cook day.

David Cook has become so popular, he is now a household name. His popularity has reached the celebs in Hollywood. In a recent interview with Lauren Conrad for Rolling Stones magazine, she said she was voting for Cook to win Idol. This morning he spoke on the Mix 93.3 and 95.7 the Vibe morning show before heading off to do his "concert" at the Kansas City Power and Light District, a concert where he only sang two songs, Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi, and a Mariah Carey song. Later on tonight he'll perform once again in Blue Springs, his hometown. Hopefully it'll last more than 20 minutes.

Prom. What else.

Prom has come and gone. Though prom was fun...afterprom was more fun. The giant blow up obstacle course however, was more painful than fun. I have a giant burn on my hip from going down the slide. One of the best part was the hypnotist show. Even though half of the people up there were faking...it was hilarious. The hypnotized people some how managed to lose their bellybuttons and one even started stripping. Overall, it was organized really well with surprisingly no cheesy decorations. I guess we'll have to see how next year's prom compares.

A bit excessive...

Once again, prom has come up on my blog. Though this time, for a different reason. Yesterday in biology, my teacher showed my class a power point on the effects of drinking and driving. It was pretty gruesome. It was something none of us wanted to see two days before prom. Then, once again, today on KLHS they showed a video of cars after being hit by drunk drivers. But that wasn't the extent of it. When I was leaving school, there was a traffic back up. One bigger than most days. Today it was because there were police officers and Rotary members handing out candy for everyone that had their seat belt buckled and organ donor cards to all that didn't then proceeded to tell us to "slow down for prom". Ok I get the idea. I get that they're trying to warn us about what can happen...but...they may've taken it too far.

Prom Craziness.

Prom is a week away and many girls (me included) are frantically searching for the perfect dress and calling every nearby hair and nail salon to make last minute appointments while the guys are wracking their brains for the most origional way to ask their date to the big dance. While prom is a big deal filled with drama for everyone, I think most would agree when I say prom matters most to the girls in our school. This is a chance for us to show off how great we can look in our dream dress with freshly painted nails and toes and complicated up-do's. Prom is one of the most stressful times of the year. Teachers would back me up on this. One of my teachers was recently talking about how all of us go into prom night with our expectations set way too high, only to be let down when one minor thing goes wrong. She continued to say to remember that it's not a big of a deal as we all make it. In some ways this is true. There's no way that everything is going to be perfect. It'll be fun as long as it doesn't turn out the way it did in the "scary" movie Prom Night. So. All I have to say is: get over it if it's not the best night of your life. Life isn't a high school cliche. Besides, there's always next year.

Finally.

There are only 26 more days of school left. For me that's hard to believe. This school year has gone by the fastest it ever has. Probably because this year has been packed full of constant, non-stop school work. And if it's not school work, it some how relates to school. From the newspaper trip to Philly (one of the best trips I think I've been on) to the many hours I was stuck at forensics tournaments, I've hardly had time to pay attention to how much things have changed. I can easily say I have changed. I think everyone does when they get in to high school. All I can say is thank God this school year is almost over. There's been enough drama for two years. I think it's time for a break.

Don't be MIA for M.I.A.

Not everyone can pull off mixing hip-hop, reggae, dancehall, and electro in one cd but artist M.I.A. has successfully done so. M.I.A., a Sri Lankan singer born in Londan has managed to appeal to the US population. Her debut album, Arular, was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her second album, Kala, released in 2007, did even better and was given the title Album of the Year by Blender and Rolling Stone magazines. M.I.A. was also included in USA Today's list of 100 Most Interesting People of 2007. Her songs aren't typical songs played on the radio but are none the less popular. Her top songs are Paper Planes, Boyz, Sunshowers, and Galang. M.I.A. will be playing at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kansas later on in May.

Shhh...don't tell.

I'm what some would call an "in the closet" KU fan. I've grown up liking KU, but won't admit it. Probably because I like MU more and I have too much fun critisizing KU no matter how much talent their players have. But, on Sunday, I managed to drag myself down to Lawrence for the KU parade. Over 100,000 people turned up for the legendary event. Lines in restaurants were long and the bathroom lines were even longer. But the 10 minute parade was worth the 3 hour wait.
My avid KU-fan dad took my sister, her friend Kelsey and I to Lawrence, one of his two alma maters (the other was MU...). On the way out we had grabbed blankets, coats, and gloves expecting the weather to be freezing cold, like the meteorologists had predicted. But instead, it was sunny outside, not warm or cold.
We finally arrived and several hours later we some how managed to get a position front-row to all the KU floats and tiny cars carrying the players.
Ten minutes, and several pictures later, it was over. Instead of rushing to Allen Fieldhouse like everyone else, we toured the campus, somewhere I could be living in a couple of years.
We all started to get tired and left campus. Nearly every car that passed was covered in KU paraphenelia and would honk at every passer-by. We finally made it home from the memorable day, regretting that we didn't get to go to the awards ceremony.
Oh well, there's always next year.

Baby Mama

Baby Mama is basically a Knocked Up for girls. SNL stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler play the two main roles. Fey plays Kate Holbrook, a successfull business woman who dreams of having a child, but, learns she's infertile. So, she hires Angie Ostrowiski, Poehler's character, to carry her baby, hence the name Baby Mama. Angie is a working class, not so classy woman from South Philly. When she shows up at Kate's house with no where else to stay, the war between the two women begin. And of course, ends with a cheesy life lesson about the value of family.

The Love Guru

Mike Myers is making a comeback. He's starring in a new movie called The Love Guru, a comedy featuring Jessica Alba, Jessica Simpson, and Justin Timberlake. The movie is about a a self-help guru who has devoted his life to helping married couples overcome their arguments. He is brought to the US to fix the long-lost marriage between a famous hockey star and his estranged wife in hopes of winning the Stanley Cup. Instead, the whole team begins to suffer. The movie comes out June 20th.
